Rochehaut
Culinary, tourist
Rochehaut is a very authentic historic old village that has been inextricably linked to Frahan for more than two thousand years.
The meander at the foot of Rochehaut surrounds the village of Frahan with its hotels, restaurants, petting zoo, and old tobacco barns.
Thanks to its exceptional location, Rochehaut enjoys a magnificent view, like a "balcony in the forest." Renowned hotels have established themselves in the village, surrounding the listed church. Two exhibition spaces offer painters and sculptors from all walks of life the opportunity to showcase their talent.
Isolated in its valley, the former manor of Laviot (where the villa is located) lies in an idyllically peaceful setting. Laviot is reached via a slate site, Hour, where there is also a ford, a hotel, and a mill.
A visit to the animal park on the small tourist train and the Country Life Discovery Centre are an essential addition to a stay in Rochehaut.
Be sure to go inside the small church of Rochehaut , Église Saint-Firmin, from the 12th or 13th century, with beautiful drawings on the ceiling.
Frahan
The most beautiful view of Belgium
Frahan is inextricably linked to Rochehaut. From its balcony, this village is so appreciated, with its classified exceptional natural heritage, the wooded ridges, the church from 1843, and several typical 17th-century houses of the Semois Valley. As everywhere along the Semois, it is the viewpoints that attract attention. Some are less well-known, accessible only via hiking trails , but certainly worth the effort, such as those of "les Echelles", "des Corbeaux", and "les Crêtes de Frahan" .
Alle-Sur-Semois
Water sports, culinary, cafes...
Alle-sur-Semois is a beautiful village in the Ardennes, characterized by its many tobacco drying barns. Only a few are still in use. The village is situated on the River Semois, where an old washing place has recently been restored. The river is excellent for water sports such as canoeing and fishing. Alle is known for the Sacré Coeur (Sacred Heart), a beautiful panoramic viewpoint located in the southwest.
Laforêt
The most beautiful village in Wallonia
Laforêt preserved the typical character of the villages of the southern Ardennes.
Starting from the village fountain, along the way you will encounter the wild hunter, the white lady, the satyr, the devil, the gnomes, or the werewolf…
Laforêt prospered from tobacco cultivation on the silt banks of the Semois. A few drying sheds in the center of this beautiful village full of character still bear witness to this past.
The 'Pont de Claies' through time
Down in the village, a small woven wood bridge (claies) is laid across the Semois in the summer. This is a legacy of the tobacco growers who thus traveled to the fertile cultivation land along the river without having to take a detour… This walk takes you there.
Vresse-Sur-Semois
Semois & art
A tourist attraction for over a century thanks to activities such as fishing and walks, the municipality has expanded its offerings over the years to include kayak trips, a recreation center , and more. All this centered around its main asset: the Semois! This river is so majestic and charming that it also managed to attract a different kind of audience: artists. Numerous artists found their way to the village of Vresse, which soon became known as the hotbed of culture in the region . The Hotel “La Glycine” became the flagship, where José Chaidron welcomed numerous domestic and foreign artists, which ultimately led to the creation of the “School of Vresse,” an art meeting place.
Even today, art lovers come to the village to admire both the exhibitions of contemporary artists and the works of old masters.
This beautiful municipality owes much to its rich past. The inhabitants make it a point to maintain the chapels, washhouses, drinking troughs, tobacco drying barns, etc. A prime example of this is the village of Laforêt, which is part of the “Most Beautiful Villages of Wallonia” and where time seems to stand still.
Bouillon
The city
The town of Bouillon is one of the most beautiful towns in the Ardennes and is, of course, known for the medieval castle that towers magnificently above the city. The history of Bouillon and the castle are inextricably linked to that of Godfrey of Bouillon , the famous knight who led the First Crusade to the Holy Land in 1096. Today, you can visit the castle, and it is highly recommended. From the high towers, you have a magnificent view of the River Semois and the lower parts of the city. You can also enjoy a birds of prey show!
In Bouillon, you can enjoy a lovely walk and visit the local brewery. There are also good places to enjoy a well-deserved meal , and especially in spring and summer, the terraces are packed with day-trippers. We have compiled a Top 10 Sights list for you so you don't miss a thing during your visit!
Bohan
Eternal nature, countless little restaurants...
Bohan is a border town with only 450 inhabitants. The village is situated in the 177-hectare Bohan-Membre National Park . The River Semois flows through this park. In a bend of the river lies a protruding headland called 'Le Châtelet'. Many animals live in the national park, including badgers. In the past, people hunted these beautiful animals. Badger fat was considered an excellent ointment for rheumatic pains, and badger hair was used to make shaving brushes. Pike, barbel, and other river fish are found in large numbers in this area. However, a fishing license is required!
